Welcome to the temporary site of The Indie Press and the book going Local!
Thank you for taking the time to visit. Being temporary and very basic, this site will give you an idea of what my book is about and how to pre-order it. As you have seen or already know the book will debut this coming fall in paperback. I#39;ve already been overwhelmed with the response for pre-orders and wanted to make that option available to you as well.
In an attempt to keep life simple, the book price including PA State Sales Tax is an even $20.00 Shipping is another $3.00 if you need it. Also, keeping life simple and doing my part to decrease world debt (smile) I am accepting just cash or check at this time.
Take a moment to read through my Introduction and an excerpt from About This Book. Instructions on pre-ordering are at the bottom.
Again, thank you for your interest in my first book! With your support I hope to be as successful as an author as an artist.
Introduction:
We live in such a wonderful time and place! A time when the hills and valleys of the Keystone state which once stood still and lay quiet, now rush with rivers of fine wines, craft beers and cheer with culinary acclaim. This is also a grand new era of the coffee shop, when young and old alike can sit for hours chatting, working, writing and delving into everything from poetry to politics.
Here#39;s a place, the heart of Pennsylvania, where we have a bounty of unique restaurants, pubs and cafs, independently owned and operated by our friends and neighbors. In State College there#39;s a brewpub whose beers have won medals and are served at other area restaurants that believe in and support them (no wonder it#39;s called "Happy Valley"). Up in Wellsboro, you#39;ll find a classic stainless steel diner that serves some of the best home cooking and fresh made pies this side of heaven. Down the road from Port Royal, there#39;s a vintage 1940s luncheonette where they serve a completely vegetarian menu. And here in my quaint village of Boalsburg, two guys took a landmark gas station that was slated for the bulldozer and turned it into one of the coolest coffee shops this side of Seattle.
This is truly a time to take the time and experience what I like to call edible and drinkable art. To seek out, find, and support these renaissance men and women who don#39;t consider what they do a job, but a passion. It#39;s also the time to just say NO and break away from the cookie-cutter chains and fast food places and try something creative, fresh, independently owned and damn good!
I#39;ve had some of my greatest adventures finding these places. Along the way and while enjoying incredible food and drink, I#39;ve met some of the nicest and most interesting people you can imagine. All these destinations, adventures, experiences, the people and their stories and many of my own, have inspired me. So much so that I want to share it all with you, to help inspire you so that you too can experience and taste the goodness that#39;s around us.
Now, go to your car or roll out your motorcycle. Grab your sweetie and unfold your map. Turn off the cell phone, start your engine and allow me to bring you to this world of lovingly prepared foods, wonderfully handcrafted beers, fresh coffee and some of the cool places that serve all that up. All right here in central Pennsylvania and all found just by going local!
Enjoy!
Ken
About this book:
This is not so much a guidebook and definitely not a rating or review (I#39;ll speak more on that later). It#39;s not meant to honor one place more than another and is not a definitive work. I wanted to save some for a second edition and I also wanted you to find some on your own - using your map, asking locals, and by just hitting the road to discover what#39;s around the next curve.
I live in a log cabin that I, along with a handful of talented local guys, built. The massive and beautiful logs of its skeleton came to me as the result of a wrong turn on a back road, but there was nothing wrong about where that turn took me (For the full story about that, visit my art website at www.kenhull.com). This seeming error turned out to be one of the sweetest blessings in my life, which is exactly what I desire for you - to be blessed by what#39;s down the road and around that curve.
If you have locally owned eateries and pubs in your immediate area, visit them often, take your friends and have fun. But every once in a while, get in the car or fire up the hog, jump on your bicycle, or heck, maybe just put on some good walking shoes and hit the road. God has given us a huge "backyard" with as many places to play as there are other "kids" to play with.
This book is more like a journal, travel log, memoirs, fact, fiction and hopefully a good resource book as well. Please keep in mind though, as you are reading that I will ramble, digress, go off on tangents, get on soap boxes, pretend I#39;m an historian, share experiences, spin tales, make stuff up, joke, kid, and have a lot of fun.
My intention along the way is to be an advocate not a critic, a scout and messenger rather than a reviewer as well as a lover of la vie, whose experiences and discoveries will be like an adventure for you. My hope is that through it all you will be inspired and encouraged to break away from the chain gang (chain restaurants) and fast food places, and experience for yourself the rich blessings of indie (independent) owned eating and drinking establishments that we have in Central Pennsylvania. I fear that if we don#39;t support our local businesses and the old school mom and pop places, they will surely die and be forgotten.
Then what?
